I read: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Setting+Up+Disks+for+MapR

for executing: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Single+Node+-+Ubuntu

However it's not immediately clear how that applies to a laptop (that has only one disk). Is it possible to point MapR at a regular directory just to test MapR out?

Please look at the section "To test without formatting physical disks" in the first link you mentioned (http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Setting+Up+Disks+for+MapR)

It describes how to set/format disks based on a flat file on disk. Note: this will it will give you just an overview of how MapR works, not a true indication of the performance you would achieve with dedicated disks or partitions.
